I love the anticipation of the progression of the spring gardens — what comes next, each step of the way. 

She turned to the sunlight
    And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neighbor:
    “Winter is dead.

This week there have been a couple more emergents. The first of the tulips, the beginnings of the primroses, and an ancestral line of daffodils.

These white daffodils were in my great-grandmother’s gardens back in Chicago and then subsequently in my grandmother’s. A couple years ago she dug up some bulbs and shipped them to me in New York. Now they are in mine.
